2 Day Chiang Mai Trekking Adventure
Escape modernity and experience Chiang Mai Trekking on our 2 day Doi Inthanon Eco Adventure that begins on the heights of Doi Inthanon Mountain with its renowned panoramic views over Northern Thailand before descending to a remote Karen Hill Tribe village where you spend the night.
Over the 2 days the trekking is not arduous and providing your party have a normal level of fitness the trekking will not present too much of a challenge but will present a series of beautiful views and vistas and some unique experiences. This Chiang Mai trekking experience takes you through the fertile valleys in the foothills of Doi Inthanon, through jungles, past refreshing waterfalls and hill tribe villages.
Day 1 – Chiang Mai to Doi Inthanon
Have some breakfast at your Chiang Mai hotel before your car and driver arrives to collect you at 08.30 in the morning.
Driving southwest from Chiang Mai you scale the slopes of the Doi Inthanon mountain climbing right to the summit with its 2 historic pagodas and awe inspiring views and vistas over the valleys below.
Take lunch at a local restaurant on the Doi Inthanon mountain before departing on foot for a 2 hour trek in the company of your guide. Your destination is a small Karen Hill Tribe village which is where you will spend the night. Things are basic here but authentic; just the way it should be! Your Guide is also guest chef and will prepare an evening meal of scrumptious Thai food.
Day 2 – Doi Inthanon to Chiang Mai
Enjoy breakfast in the Karen Hill Tribe village and afterwards its off trekking again following mountain trails that pass through mountain scenery, jungle and cultivated valleys. The trekking is around the foot hills of Doi Inthanon and the scenery is stunning.
At the end of the mornings trekking, your vehicle will be waiting to take you to Vachiratarn waterfall, where the falls tumble over a granite escarpment from the Vachiratarn River. This makes for a very picturesque spot for a picnic which is exactly what is arranged for you. Relax, enjoy lunch and explore the waterfall and surrounding area before journeying back to Chiang Mai by car to your hotel or airport.
Elephant Trekking
Elephant Trekking is also available on the second day and can be arranged on the spot via your guide.
Chiang Mai Hotels
You stay the night as guests in a small Karen hill-tribe village. The accommodation is authentic but basic with a space allocated to you on the bamboo floor of the villager’s hut. Luxury comes in the form of Sleeping bags, foam mats and mosquito nets. There are no western style toilets and washing facilities are sparse; you do as the villagers do!
You are, however, provided with a superb Thai meal prepared by your guide and you will experience the very warm hospitality of the hill tribes people. As eco adventures go this is as close to the real thing and as far away from the convenient lifestyles with flush and forget plumbing and dependable mains electricity.
Location: Doi Inthanon National Park
The highest mountain in Thailand, Doi Inthanon is part of a mountain range that separates Burma from Thailand. The mountain and the surrounding forest area was awarded National Park status in 1954, the land area of the National Park being increased in 1972 and again in 1975 to its current size of 482.40 km² (48,250 hectares).
Often dubbed “The Roof of Thailand”, the lowlands of the national park sit at 800 metres above sea level and rise up to Doi Inthanon, the highest peak at 2565 m. Encompassed within is a hugely diverse climate and ecology. It is here that you will find the second largest number of bird species of any national park in Thailand.
Getting There
Standing sentinel over Chiang Mai, Doi Inthanon mountain and the surrounding national park, which covers some 48,250 hectares of land, is best and most conveniently accessed from Chiang Mai. There are regular flights in and out of Chiang Mai International Airport particularly from Bangkok. Once you have arrived in Chiang Mai, our Guides, Drivers and Cars will do the rest.
Get in touch with us to discuss your trip plan and for a proposal that includes hotels at local rates, regional flights, local transport and almost any form of recreation that you can think of!
When to go
You can go trekking in Doi Inthanon National Park all year round but there are seasonal weather variations and for those who prefer to go trekking in cooler weather these are worth noting.
The lowlands of Doi Inthanon National Park are at an elevation of 800 metres and are generally warm and dry. As you rise 2565 metres above sea level to the summit of Doi Inthanon temperatures can and have sunk as low as -8 degrees C and frosts are not an unusual occurrence. If you find yourself in Chiang Mai from November to January and want to go trekking it is well worth noting this as you will need to take some warmer clothing.
The dry season runs from November through to April whilst Monsoon rains can be expected between May and October. But it is still perfectly safe to go trekking during the rainy season and in many ways it is even more pleasurable actually:
- The waterfalls are in full spate
- The vegetation is green
- Wildflowers bloom
- The rains refresh the air
