2 Day Chiang Mai Family Mountain Bike Adventure

Experience fantastic mountain biking both on- and off-road in the hill country to the north of Chiang Mai. Discover small hill tribe villages and witness authentic rural life in Thailand whilst visiting a wide variety of hill tribe and ethnic minority villages.

The Chiang Mai Family Mountain Bike Adventure is a 2 day activity holiday and cultural experience during which you will witness some incredible scenery in the Chiang Dao area and offers some exceptional views of Thailand’s third highest peak.

Day 1

Pile-on the breakfast at your Chiang Mai hotel because we are coming to pick you up straight afterwards! From you Chiang Mai hotel you journey northwards in a covered pick-up truck to Chiang Dao. First stop is at an elephant camp within the jungles of northern Thailand where you can watch elephants bathing in the river and a demonstration of what they used to get up to in the logging camps.

Relaxation over! Its time to start cycling and the route begins gently on rural back roads before plunging off-road to follow a great trail through beautiful landscapes before reaching small, remote hill tribe villages. On the first day you pass through Lahu, Lisu, Akkha and elusive Palong villages; this is a veritable cross-section of the cultural diversity found in the hills beyond Chiang Mai city and a far cry from the potted anthropological tours you will find advertised in the latter.

The ride culminates at the Palong Village which is where you spend the night and have an evening meal of Thai food prepared for you. The accommodation is basic but authentic and adds spice to the experience.

Day 2

After breakfast we set out on a great off-road trail before getting back on paved roads. The cycling is easy and the natural surroundings awe-inspiring!

In the afternoon we cycle along small paved roads to the Chiang Dao Caves which is where the bike tour ends. There is plenty of time to explore the caves and relax before rejoining the car for the transfer back to Chiang Mai and your Chiang Mai Hotel.

Cycling Fitness Level

Easy cycling with off-road trails. Suitable for participants in good fitness condition. Cycling experience is recommended to fully enjoy the tour. This is fine for Family Fun.

Chiang Mai Hotels

You overnight as a guest in a Palong Village in Padang Lodge which is a traditional northern Thai style house. Padang Lodge does off separate rooms each with a Thai style mattress on the floor and each mattress is draped with a mosquito net. Padang Lodge also has western style toilets and a hot shower, both houses in a separate building.

Don’t expect luxury!  The Padang Lodge offers an authentic glimpse of the lifestyles led by the Hill Tribes of northern Thailand with a couple of creature comforts thrown in.

2 Day Chiang Mai Mountain Biking Adventure Destinations

The 2 Day Chiang Mai Family Mountain Bike Adventure takes place to the north of Chiang Mai in the mountainous area of Chiang Dao. Alluding to the Stars (“Dao” means Star in Thai), Chiang Dao is characterized by limestone peaks that soar skywards reaching heights of 2186m (7174 ft) creating very spectacular scenery.

At this elevated altitude the climate in and around Chiang Dao is noticeably cooler and drier than down on the plains and during the cool season (November to January) things can get chilly!

Hill tribe villages are scattered over the mountain range as are caves. There are mountain streams, waterfalls and extensive bamboo forests. All this combines to make Chiang Dao perfect for trekking and mountain biking particularly.

2 Day Chiang Mai Family Mountain Bike Adventure Itinerary

This is a great trip for small groups or Family Fun from Chiang Mai. Involving 2 complete days of Mountain Biking in Chiang Dao to the north of Chiang Mai it takes you to see an elephant camp, caves, stunning scenery and many remote hill tribe villages including one that you stay as a guest at overnight.

You don’t have to be a pro mountain biker for this bike tour but you and your group should be reasonably fit and have some cycling experience if you are going to get the most out of it.
