Phuket Golf Courses

Phuket is Thailand’s largest tropical island and is about an hour away by air from Bangkok. Phuket is also the most popular destination in Thailand for beach breaks and a magnet for tropical island lifestyles, hideaways and recreation. Phuket is the home of some of the best golf courses in Thailand and we have selected la crème de la crème of these golf courses for inclusion in our Phuket Golf Vacation Packages.

The advantage of Phuket is that it is an island and subsequently all the golf courses are in very close proximity; travel time is therefore kept at a minimum. Of course, the advantages don’t stop there! Phuket has hotels to suit every budget, a plethora of restaurants to titillate al tastes, spas and Thai massage, a vibrant nightlife and a tropical island lifestyle that brims with recreation from golf to sailing, fishing, water sports and onwards.

The standard of golf on Phuket is exceptionally high with Blue Canyon occupying the top spot. The recently opened Red Mountain Golf Course is both breathtakingly beautiful and frustratingly challenging. The Phuket Country Club, Loch Palm and Laguna offer slightly less challenging golf but still in amongst stunningly beautiful tropical island scenery.

Loch Palm Golf Club

Dubbed the most relaxing golf course on Phuket, Loch Palm Golf Club is about 15 minutes by car from Patong and is sandwiched between Katu Waterfall and Katu Village. One of the most prominent features of the golf course is the presence of the largest lake on any Phuket golf course and it is on the banks of this lake that the first holes of the 18-hole course are played. If you can negotiate your way around this oversized water hazard you are given a little respite until you encounter another lake towards the end of the front nine.

Loch Palm Golf Club has recently received a multimillion dollar redesign and upgrade and is perfectly primed to offer a challenging day for all standards of golfers. As the refurbishments mature, the 18-holes at Loch Palm Golf Course are rapidly rivaling some of the top class golf courses on Phuket.

Blue Canyon Golf Club - Canyon Course

“One of the most renowned Championship Golf Courses in Asia” say many prominent golf magazines and the collection of awards are testament to this. In 2000, the Blue Canyon was awarded the title of "Asia-Pacific Golf Resort of The Year" and "Asia-Pacific Golf Course of the Year". In 2001, the Asian Golf Magazine awarded the Blue Canyon Golf Club “The Best Championship Course in Asia” and “The Best Golf Course in Thailand” and the nominations keep on coming even today.

The Blue Canyon Golf Course has also hosted several international competitions including the Johnny Walker Classic in 1994 and the Honda Classic in 1996. The Johnny Walker Classic returned there in January 1998 -- won by Tiger Woods after a play-off with Ernie Els.

Designed by Yoshikazo Kato, the Canyon Course is studded with natural hazards including lakes, mature trees, contoured fairways and strategically placed bunkers. A choice of 5 teeing grounds ensures that the course can be played by golfers of all levels but with the renowned long carries over water or canyons and the famously fast greens, the Canyon Course at Blue Canyon is one of Thailand’s great golfing challenges.

The Canyon Course is also a walking course and can be tiring in hot weather. The Caddies are without doubt among the very best in Thailand.

Mission Hills Golf Club

Designed by Jack Nicklaus, Mission Hills Golf Course on Phuket is located to the northeast of the island, very close to the ocean and some of the holes actually run up to the water’s edge. The golf course sits on land formerly occupied by a rubber plantation and features white sand beach bunkers that vibrantly contrast with the aqua marine ocean and the deep green sheen of the Paspalum covered fairways. Mission Hills has been described as “living art”.

But don’t be deceived! The ocean views and paint palette of colours mask several unique hazards. Water comes into play at seven holes, prevailing winds can add to the challenge and the large waste bunkers will catch you if you get offline!

Mission Hills Clubhouse is commodious and opulent with several restaurants dispensing Thai and international fare. There is also a soothing spa within the clubhouse to look forward to upon completion of your round of golf.

Note: that Paspalum is being replaced by Bermuda grass and will be completed by 01 November 2010 but the course remains open and playable.

Red Mountain Golf Club

The Red Mountain Golf Club is the new kid on the block in terms of Phuket golf courses. Winding its way between red hills, the Red Mountain Golf Club has rapidly garnered a reputation as being one of the finest golf courses in Thailand and it is certainly one of the most picturesque as well.

Prepare for huge elevation changes from one hole to another, jungle-fringed holes and fairways where the penalty of inaccuracy is heavy. Watch out of the 17th which is a downhill par three which has a 40 metre drop through the jungle canopy to the green below; golf club selection may take a while!

The clubhouse has all the amenities and facilities that you would expect including International and Thai food which you can enjoy whilst gazing out over beautiful views and tropical island scenery of Phuket.
