3 Day Kanchanaburi Thailand Bicycle Tour from Bangkok
Stunning Scenery, awe-inspiring Places to Stay & incredible Cycling Trails . . .
Not many places compare to Kanchanaburi especially for cycling and bike tours; incredible scenery, superb riding, cultural and historic interest and some very memorable meals combine to create what always is one of the best little bike rides ever.
This 3 Day Bike Tour in Thailand takes you to the province of Kanchanaburi to the west of Bangkok. Kanchanaburi shares borders with Burma and is the third largest province in Thailand. It is mountainous, tree covered, beautiful, rural and in places very remote; an ideal formula for Activity Holidays and Adventure!
During the 3-tour bike tour you hit a wide variety of trails including quiet back roads, red laterite forest trails and some off-road trails through the jungle. As the bike tour progresses the level of riding becomes slightly more challenging. Along the quiet back roads at the beginning things are undemanding and no technical ability is required. On the final day, however, there are some off-road descents to deal with.
All the cycling is done as a group complete with cycling guides who set an even pace throughout the bike tour. There is also a support vehicle following the group at all times which is well stocked with water to keep you refreshed! The guides are very knowledgeable about the area and can offer a running commentary about the area, the history, points of special interest and the lifestyles of the local communities dotted around Kanchanaburi.
Day 1: Bangkok - Kanchanaburi
Cycling Distance about 32Km
This 3 Day bike tour in Kanchanaburi begins at the front door of your Bangkok hotel. We pick you up early in the morning for the journey to Kanachanaburi by air-conditioned vehicle (normally mini-van).
You cant visit Kanchanaburi town without indulging in a little sightseeing; the infamous Bridge over the River Kwai, the War Museum and the cemetery. We also jump on a train along the death railway to Krasae caves which you can explore and also have lunch.
In the afternoon the cycling commences, although nothing too strenuous on the first day. The destination is Wat Prsat Muang Sing and to get there we cycle along quiet, picturesque country roads passing through teak plantations and passed small Thai villages along the way.
Wat Prsat Muang Sing is a historical park thought to have functioned as a trading post on the Kwai Noi River during the days of the Khmer Empire (12th century). Ride around the park and visit the museum before packing the bikes up and transferring to your hotel for the night which is just a short drive away.
Overnight at the Phung Wan Resort or similar.
Day 2 - Kanchanaburi
Cycling Distance about 45Km
You are on the saddle for most of the day today but the pace is leisurely and the rides follow some very picturesque trails that resemble a veritable palette of colours; red laterite trails, jungle greens, blue skies and more.
The trails pass through jungles, across cultivated land and passed rural villages. More challenging than the previous day, there is some undulating terrain and a gentle climb of about 2km (this can be avoided though if the prospect does not enthral!). Some of the views are stunning with valley panoramas and the rolling hills that separate Burma from Thailand.
By mid to late afternoon we reach the River Kwai Resotel which, as the name implies, is on the banks of the river Kwai. Relax with a beer beside the pool, indulge yourself with a massage to soothe those exercised limbs or board a river boat to visit a nearby Mon village.
Have dinner and Overnight at the River Kwai Resotel
Day 3 – Kanchanaburi - Bangkok
Cycling Distance about 25Km
Although shorter in distance today provides the most challenging encounter of the 3 days where cycling is concerned but fear not, if you are a competent cyclist it will be a breeze (and fun to!).
The bulk of the cycling is downhill today but there are a few inclines as well but nothing overly strenuous. There is one stretch of downhill cycling that needs some care as the trail is partly off road and quite steep. The big bonus however is the landscape that we cycle through; primary jungle and a trail that follows a small meandering tributary that flows into the Kwai Noi River. The scenery is idyllic!
At the end of the cycling trail we exchange the bikes for a river boat and cross the river to visit Hellfire Pass; a 1,000m railway cutting created by Japanese POW’s in the second World War. It’s a sobering sight particularly when you think that these men were diseased, mal nourished and given the most rudimentary of tools. Many lives were lost in the process.
Then its lunchtime . . . BBQ Chicken, Sticky Rice and Som Tam. Enjoy the perfect Thai picnic before taking the journey back to Bangkok by minivan.
Sleeping Arrangements
Charming, beautifully located, stunning views – you hear these phrases liberally banded around by Travel and Real Estate Agents alike and more often than not the description is a little bit of an over-sell to not put too finer point on it!
Over the two nights that you have in Kanchanaburi you stay in the Pung Waan Resort and the River Kwai Resotel. Neither are flamboyantly luxurious but where both are concerned these descriptive words are an understatement because the settings are outrageously stunning with an excessive ambience of rustic jungle-style charm and character.
At the River Kwai Resotel cool off in the riverside swimming pool, relax with a beer on the river banks, be pampered with a signature Thai massage or ease the limbs in the herbal steam room; all perfect remedies after a day in the saddle.
Trip profile:
This tour travels along a broad range of trails, including quiet back roads, red laterite cross-country trails with some off-road jungle trails. The first part of the tour is relatively easy and no technical prowess is required. On Day 2 the riding gets gradually more challenging and on the last day there are some off-road descents.
Riding as a group and accompanied by an experienced cycle guide at all times and a support vehicle laden with refreshments, the pace is even with regular stops being made along the way to visit points of interest and taste some local culinary specialities as well. Feel free to quiz your cycle guide about Kanchanaburi province, the local customs, the historic sights and the jungle; they know their stuff!
Kanchanaburi, Thailand
Kanchanaburi, its the 3rd largest province in Thailand and its 130km west of Bangkok. While the province Borders Burma (Myanmar), Kanchanaburi city is located at the confluence of the Kwai Noi and Kwai Yai Rivers that flow down from the jungle covered mountains that seperate Thailand from Burma. Much of the province remains jungle-clad and very remote.
Better known sights of interest in Kanchanaburi include the infamous Bridge over the River Kwai and Hellfire Pass but for those in the know, Kanchanaburi is also a magnet for eco-adventure with its mountains, jungles, waterfalls, rivers, caves and captivating locals. For part-time eco adventurers opportunities abound in Kanchanaburi with trekking, bike tours and elephant trekking to mention a few. for the more serious eco adventurer Kanchanaburi can easily present expedition style travel.
The chilled-out riverside vibe in Kanchanaburi continues to attract backpackers and the popularity of the province with Thais has far from waned; they consider the sparsely populated province of Kanchanaburi as being one of the most beautiful in the whole of Thailand.
Prepare to experience one of the best little bike rides there is, cycling down quiet backroads and jungle trails in a region of Thailand that remains one of the Kingdom’s best kept secrets.
