Cambodia
Cambodia, previously an epicentre of French Indochina, touches all who visit. Cambodia has magical qualities; it is spellbinding, charming and confounding. Surrounded by Laos to the north, Vietnam the east and Thailand to the West, its southern coastline provides a doorway to the Gulf of Thailand and a coastline studded with tropical islands. The Mekong River severs Cambodia in two bulging at the centre of the country when it flows into the Tonle Sap Lake, a phenomenon itself.
Cambodia has had an epic journey over the years spanning magnificence and despair. At 4,000BC the Khmers were already building stilt houses around the Tonle Sap Lake similar to those of today. In the year 889 the construction of Angkor Wat, the Temples of Angkor and the Khmer Empire began. In 1002 the Khmer Empire swallowed great chunks of Thailand and Laos. In 1884 Cambodia became part of French Indochina and in 1975 the Khmer Rouge began their four year reign of hell on their kin and country.
Visiting Cambodia today is a helter-skelter ride propelling you high up to the realm of the gods at Angkor Wat and the Temples of Angkor before freefalling down to the depths of depravity at the Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng Death Camp; the Khmer Rouge Killing Machine. Between the extremes Cambodia offers a captivating countryside in which to experience the rhythm of life. Pristine tropical rainforests, highlands, rivers and a coastline fringed with tropical islands transforms an expected Cambodia holiday into an unexpected adventure. If wild adventure is what you are looking for Cambodia is where you will find it!
